Emma

Chapter 10

Emma says this to Harriet
"My being charming, Harriet, is not quite enough to induce me to marry; I must find other people charming - one other person at least. And I am not only, not going to, at present, but have very little intention of ever marrying at all."

After visiting the poor, Harriet and Emma met up with Mr. Elton. The excuses Emma uses to get the two alone are funny and Emma's disappointment is silly. You'd think she'd figure it out. She try's making a child walk beside her at a Granny's pace, then having to tie her shoelace, and then breaking her shoelace - which allows for an excuse for them to stop by Mr. Elton's house to fix her shoelace...

"Cautious, very cautious," thought Emma; "he advances inch by inch and will hazard nothing till he believes himself secure."

I am enjoying this book so much more than Northanger Abbey.

Emma

Chapter 9
Mr. Elton has returned with the painting. Emma thinks his compliments are for Harriet...

Mr. Knightly is still mad at Emma about the Marten proposal.

And now there's this fascination with riddles. I do not like riddles (I prefer to be spoken to in a straight-forward manner) But I do find Mr. Woodhouse's riddle end (he can't remember the rest) funny "Kitty, a fair but frozen maid." (Jane Austen is enough of a riddle for me)

Oh, I find how Emma sees things so funny, she has no clue Mr. Elton likes her, she's so intest on her own things she doesn't notice others at all!

Trouble Words
Epithets means any word or phrase applied to a person or thing to describe an actual or attributed quality. Sentence used in "Soft, is the very word for her eye - of all epithets, the justest that could be given."

Well the whole chapter kinda confuses me. Not sure what to think. Riddles are rathering confusing and I just want plain English. I don't think Mr. Elton is happy that his charage ended upin Harriet's book. Poor Harriet and Mr. Elton both are gonna get their hearts broken because of Emma's scheming. But I think I've said that before.

Isabella (Emma's sister) is coming for a visit!!

Emma

Chapter 8
Trouble Words
Asperity means harshness or sharpness of tone, temper, or manner; severity; acrimony Sentence used in "Not Harriet's equal!" explained Mr. Knightly loudly and warmly; and with calmer asperity, added a few moments afterwards..."

Mr. Knightly and Emma argued about Harriet! Mr. Knightly had spoken to Mr. Marten and advised him to propose to Harriet. Knightly thinks it's a good match and that Harriet without knowledge of her parents social status should marry Mr. Martens. Emma, of course, is horrified and worried. She tells Mr. Knightly that Harried has refused Mr. Martens and that Harriet will get a better offer. Mr. Knightly says Emma is putting fantasies in Harriet's head and he leaves abruptly.

Emma spends the rest of the day fretting until Harriet shows up, hours later. Harriet puts Emma's mind at ease with non-stop chatter about Mr. Elton. Oh, and before Knightly leaves he tells Emma that there's NO WAY that Mr. Elton will marry Harriet!

Poor Harriet will have her heart broken. When will she just marry someone!!?

Emma

Chapter 7
Trouble Words
Unequivocal means absolute; unqualified; not subject to conditions or exceptions. Sentence used in "Your meaning must be unequivocal; no doubt a demur: and such expressions of gratitude and concern for the pain you are inflicting as propriety requires, well present themselves unbidden to your mind, I am persuaded."

Harriet has received a letter of proposal from Mr. Martens. And without thinking for herself, she ran to Emma for her answer. I hate that!! At least Catherine in Northanger Abbey said no. I keep referencing Northanger Abbey even though I didn't really like it!!

Emma threatens her friendship with Harriet, if Harriet marries Mr. Martens, they aren't 'allowed' to be friends. That is sooo low! Friendship shouldn't be based on status. But Emma bases all her opinions on a persons status. Emma half writes the reject letter herself. Poor Harriet, what a position to be put in.

I find it funny just how how long it takes for Mr. Elton to come up into the chapter. Emma talks about him near the end to Harriet. At least wait until the next day after a marriage proposal!

Emma

Chapter 6
Mr. Elton and Emma have a conversation about Harriet. Harriet seems to be what everyone is talking about. I wonder what her past is?? Mr. Elton is praising Emma for improving Harriet, making Emma believe he likes Harriet. When in truth I think Mr. Elton likes Emma. Now Mr. Elton wants Emma to draw Harriet. I am not sure what the big deal is about the drawing, but Emma thoughts are entertaining,

"Yes, good man! -thought Emma- but what has all that to do with taking likeness? You know nothing of drawing. Don't pretend to be in raptures about mine. Keep your raptures for Harriet's face."

Isabella (Emma's older sister) has 4 children, Henry, John, and Bella oh and George the baby...

Anyways Emma paints the picture and Mr. Elton is 'commissioned' to frame it in London.

I almost wish I hadn't seen the movie. I feel like I have already read the book. And by watching the movie I can not imagine what the characters look like, because I've already seen them. The book hopefully will give more details than the movie did. I do like Emma as a character even if she is spoiled. Harriet kinda annoys me the same way Catherine did! Purely because she is so naive.
Mr Woodhouse is a laugh!!

Emma

Chapter 5
Mr. Knightly and Mrs. Weston have a conversation about Emma and Harriet.

Mr Knightly "Mrs. Weston, I am not to be talked out of my dislike of her intamacy with Harriet Smith, or my dread of its doing them both harm."

Mrs. Weston "And I, Mr. Knightly, am equally stout in my confidence of its not doing them any harm."

I am not sure why Mr. Knightly thinks he's allowed to have an say in whom Emma associates with. But his opinion is dead against poor Harriet. And I actually agree with him, because Emma's scheming can't end well. Plus Harriet has a crush on someone Emma does not approve of

Emma

Chapter 4
Trouble Words
Yeomanry means the class of yeomen; small freeholding farmers. Sentence used in "The yeomanry are precisely the order of people with who I feel I can have nothing to do with."

Harriet and Emma become friends. Harriet talks all about a family she stayed with for two moths, the Martins. Particularly a Mr. Martins an unmarried man. I think Harriet likes Mr. Martens very much, except that Emma has already passed judgement on the family and deemed them unworthy for a gentleman's daughter, such as herself and Harriet.

I predict that Harriet will marry Mr. Martins, despite what Emma currently thinks.

During one of their walks they met up with Mr. Martins. Emma thinks very highly of herself and calls him "coarse and vulgar" She has it fixed in her mind that Mr Elton and Harriet belong together and is scheming for that to distract Harriet for Mr. Martin, the farmer. I half feel sorry for Mr Elton.

Emma

Chapter 3
Emma is planning a dinner party. She wants to keep her father entertained. Mr Woodhouse is a very peculiar man. He seems much older than he is and is very picky. He hates change of any kind and only like to socialize with a select group of people, consisting of the following

Mr Elton
Mrs and Miss Bates
Mrs Goddard
also all the other characters previously mentioned, the Westons and Mr Knightly

For the party Mrs Goddard has request to bring o
ne of her students (Mrs Goddard runs a girls boarding school) Miss Harriet Smith. The description of Harriet Smith is entertaining "She was a pretty girl and her beauty happened to be of a sort which Emma particularly admired. She was short, plump and fair, with a fine bloom, blue eyes, light hair, regular features, and a look of great sweetness."
So Harriet Smith came to the dinner party and Emma began scheming. I have to say Emma's scheming is very different from Catherine's quiet character in Northanger Abbey, the change is nice. But at the same time Emma feels like a spoiled rich child. I am curious about Harriet Smith and another character not mentioned in this chapter. (Frank Churchill, is who I am curious about... when will he appear?!)

So far I am not struggling to read or understand this book, like I did on the first Jane Austen I read (Northanger Abbey) But I must assume it's because I am starting to get the hang off Austen's writing style!

Emma consists of Three Volumes. Volume 1 has 18 Chapters, Volume 2 also has 18 chapters, Volume 3 has 19 Chapters. Total of 55 Chapters.

Progress
3/55 Chapters

if I read one chapter everyday I should finish by the end of February!! Fingers Crossed

Emma

Chapter 2
In this chapter we learn about Mr. Weston. Mr. Weston married Emma's companion in the first chapter.
Mr. Weston was previously married to a Miss Churchill, but she died three years into their marriage. Together though they had a son. Mr. Weston gave his son up to his dead wifes family, because at the time he could barely afford to feed himself. His son is now grown and carries the name Mr Frank Churchill. Mr. Weston is now very successful and I believe owns two properties.
Mr. Frank Churchill, upon hearing his fathers marriage, writes to the new Mrs. Weston. Suppposedly they are the most beautiful letters. PLus there is talk of him visiting!
This Chapter also talked about how Mr. Woodhouse doesn't like cake and tries to prevent Mr. and Mrs. Weston from having any at their wedding. When he can not convince them, he tries to stop everyone from eating it! He sounds like quite the character!! He has lots of 'tricks' up his sleeve!!

Emma

I have decided to read EMMA. I did recently watch the Emma Movie and so I actually know a little bit about the story. I am hoping for lots of drama!! I have found a old notebook I bought a while ago. It's a beautiful brown leather book. I am using it for my notes this time around. Because I think I would like to keep my handwritten notes. It is sometimes hard to find the time to read the chapter, write my thoughts and then copy my thoughts into a blog post. My goal however is to finish Emma in two months END OF FEBRUARY. Cross your fingers there's lots of action!!

Chapter 1
"Emma Woodhouse, handsome, clever, and rich, with a comfortable home and happy disposition, seemed to unite some of the best blessings of existence; and had lived nearly twenty-one years in the world with very little to distress or vex her."

Trouble Words
Disparity means lack of similarity or equality (a disparity in age) Sentence used in "The evil of the actual disparity in their age (and Mr Woodhouse had not married early) was much increased by his constitution and habits."
Valetudinarian means an invalid or a person who is excessively concerned about his or her poor health or ailments. Sentence used in "for having been a valetudinarian all his life..."

Characters so far
Emma, who is described above.
Miss Taylor now Mrs Weston, was Emma's governess and great friend, newly married. She was actually married on the day the book begins.
Isabella, is Emma's older sister, married with children and living in London.
Mr. Weston, Miss Taylor (the newly Mrs Weston) new husband. He was a widower for 4ish years.
Mr. Knightly "a sensible man about seven or eight-and-thirty; was not only a very old and intimate friend of the family, but particularly connect with it as the elder brother of Isabella's husband"

Jane Austen

I have bought the complete series of Jane Austen Books. I am so happy!! So many wonderful smelling pages!! I LOVE how a new book smells.
Sadly it does mean that I now have two copies of Northanger Abbey and Mansfield Park. But it was WAY cheaper to buy on HUGE book instead of all the small individual books. So it works out.
I have decided to start reading
Emma By Jane Austen
I can't wait! I have already seen the movie, so I should be able to follow the story easier.
I have already made several posts about Emma,
so choosing what to read was pretty easy.

Northanger Abbey

CONCLUSION
To start I found this book very dull and hard to understand. The Characters were difficult to relate too, but I grew up extremely and Catherine was extremely naive . The last 6 chapters were my favorite. The story picked up and started to get a little exciting. Things finally started happening.

The last chapter was a bit disappointing, but Catherine and Henry did end up married.

I wish Jane Austen had shared Isabella's and Captain Tilney's fates. But I am glad to know Eleanor had a happy ending too.

Now to decide which Jane Austen to read next!!

Northanger Abbey

Chapter 31
What an unsatisfactory way to end a book?!!!!!

Quick Rundown
Eleanor gets married
Begs her father to allow Henry and Catherine to marry
as Catherine's parents would ony give their consent if the General did
THEN
they DO get married
NO wedding details
and the book ends with

"I leave it to be settled, by whomsoever it may concern, whether the tendency of this work be altogether to recommend parental tyranny, or regard filial disobedience."

What kind of ending is THAT???

Stay tuned for my conclusion

Northanger Abbey

Chapter 30
Finally some action!! Henry Tilney arrives, oh how I like his character! We finally get to see/hear the Generals Secrets! Now we know what he is all about. Mr Thorpe told crazy lies to General Tilney. He did it because he thought HE would be marrying Catherine. General Tilney didn't do his own research, assumed Catherine was rich! Then once General Tilney left; he met up with Thorpe again (accidental) and Thorpe told him the exact opposite! You would think the General would look more carefully into things! Anyways long story short Henry is outraged by his father's actions, and has come to offer his hand to our dear Catherine.
Finally a WEDDING

Northanger Abbey

Chapter 29
And now she is home I love her arrival at home she is surrounded by people who truly love her and she feels that love! Their love is temporary happiness though, Catherine seems to be moping. I think she is very much in love with Henry Tilney.
Again we met Mrs Allen who continues to love her her clothes more than anything.

Northanger Abbey

Chapter 28
General Tilney leaves and finally Catherine, Eleanor, and Henry are free to laugh and chat! THey have a grand time, enjoying each others company. Even when Henry, has to leave the two girls have fun!
And then disaster strikes (I love disasters!!) and Captain Tilney arrives, just after Catherine talks herself into being civil to him. Eleanor opens the door and delivers more bad news. They are leaving (aka the Tilneys)!! And they are sending Catherine away, unaccompanied!! Unaccompanied, is something you don't hear of in those days.
She has to leave ht next morning at 7! The manner is which she is kicked out is horrible. I can not believe that Captain Tilney AND General Tilney (who has requested Catherine to leave, through Captain Tilney) left it up to poor Eleanor to till Catherine.
I am super curious as to why she is being kicked out, but I bet Miss Isabella Thorpe has something to do with it.

Northanger Abbey

Chapter 27
Isabella writes! How Ironic, to believe Isabella had the guts to make such claims or even the guts to write! She of course claims to hate Captain Tilney (though her letter is full of him) and she claims to not understand why James left and desperately wants wants Catherine to write to him on her behalf.
But this time Catherine isn't a fool (about time she grew up some) and she is disgusted with Isabella. Though Catherine still has a strong dislike for Captain Tilney she is happy that he is not engaged to Isabella. Eleanor and Henry too are happy to hear their brother is safe.
